Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, emphasized that the essence of Bangladesh is deeply tied to the 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan. He highlighted the pivotal role of the war in shaping the country’s statehood and political landscape. Tarique urged for unity among all sectors to leverage the current political dynamics for national progress.
In a meeting with leaders of the Democratic United Front, a coalition of left-leaning parties in Bangladesh, Tarique stressed the importance of seizing the new political opportunities arising in the country. He called for collaborative efforts between the government and opposition to propel Bangladesh towards a brighter future. The need for national unity and strengthening the democratic framework was underscored by Tarique during the discussions.
Expressing condolences over the recent passing of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the DUF leaders engaged in talks with Tarique on the prevailing political scenario in Bangladesh. Concerns were raised regarding the country’s law and order situation, prompting Tarique to advocate for a fair, free, and credible national election. Emphasizing the significance of unity, he urged all stakeholders to stand together for the nation’s welfare.
Following his return to Bangladesh after 17 years of exile, Tarique reiterated the foundational role of the Liberation War in the country’s history. His arrival coincided with the announcement of the 13th national parliamentary election scheduled for February 12 next year. Analysts anticipate that Tarique’s participation in the upcoming elections will be a litmus test for Bangladesh’s political landscape under the current interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
