The Bar Council of India has requested specific information from the Bar Council of West Bengal regarding Mamata Banerjee’s enrollment and practice status. This request follows Mamata Banerjee’s appearance before the Calcutta High Court wearing advocate’s robes and arguing in a PIL related to alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal. The BCI has directed the State Bar Council to provide records concerning Mamata Banerjee’s enrollment, continuation on the State Roll of Advocates, and any suspension or resumption of practice during her tenure as Chief Minister.
“It has been brought to the notice of the Bar Council of India that Ms. Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court wearing advocate’s robes,” stated the communication. Referring to professional conduct rules, the BCI emphasized the need to verify Mamata Banerjee’s enrollment status, practice history, and any suspension or resumption from official records. The BCI has requested details such as her enrollment number, date of enrollment, and the existence of a valid Certificate of Practice in her favor.
The Bar Council of India further directed the West Bengal State Bar Council to provide certified copies of all relevant records, including entries from the State Roll and suspension or resumption records. The BCI emphasized the preservation of original records in their current state and instructed against any alterations pending the submission of the requested information. This development occurred after Mamata Banerjee’s appearance before the Calcutta High Court in connection with a PIL alleging post-poll violence in West Bengal.
