Leandro Trossard scored twice as Belgium secured a dominant 5-1 victory over New Zealand, securing the top spot in Group G and a spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32. Despite both Belgium and Egypt finishing with five points, Belgium claimed the group’s top position due to goal difference. Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran also ensured their progression, with Iran finishing third with three points and New Zealand exiting the tournament with just one point.
Belgium took control early in the game and narrowly missed a goal in the 11th minute when Trossard hit the post. Although a penalty was initially awarded to Belgium after Finn Surman’s handball, it was overturned following a VAR review. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 28th minute when Trossard scored from Kevin De Bruyne’s cross.
In the second half, Trossard extended Belgium’s lead by chesting down a De Bruyne delivery and volleying home. De Bruyne then added to the scoreline with a low finish from the edge of the area, becoming Belgium’s oldest goal scorer at a FIFA World Cup at the age of 34. New Zealand managed to score a goal in the 84th minute, but Belgium responded with two more goals through Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers to seal a comprehensive victory.
Belgium will now proceed to the Round of 32, where they will face one of the top eight third-placed teams, while New Zealand continues to seek their first-ever World Cup win.
