England Test captain Ben Stokes is set to make his comeback to competitive cricket as he joins Durham’s 15-member squad for the County Championship match against Northamptonshire starting Friday at Chester-le-Street. Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, was excluded from England’s ongoing second Test against New Zealand at The Oval due to an investigation related to a nightclub incident in London. Both players have now been given the green light to participate in domestic cricket matches.
Stokes, known for his skills as a seam-bowling all-rounder, will feature for Durham at Chester-le-Street, while Atkinson is expected to play for Surrey against Glamorgan in Cardiff. The incident in question occurred when Stokes and Atkinson breached England’s midnight curfew while celebrating their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s and were present at a nightclub where a member of the team’s security staff was involved in an altercation with a Saracens rugby player.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the independent Cricket Regulator are currently conducting investigations into the matter. Speculation had arisen about Stokes potentially retiring from international cricket, but those concerns were alleviated when the 35-year-old returned to training with Durham and is now gearing up for his third county match of the season. In Stokes’ absence, Joe Root has assumed the role of England’s Test captain on a temporary basis.
The upcoming third Test between England and New Zealand is scheduled to commence at Trent Bridge next Thursday, necessitating clarity on the investigations and the availability of Stokes and Atkinson by Monday.
