Celebrity Bengali filmmaker and former Trinamool Congress legislator Raj Chakrabarty has decided to take a permanent break from politics to focus on his film career. Chakrabarty, who represented the Barrackpore Assembly constituency in West Bengal from 2021 to 2026, lost to BJP candidate Kaustav Bagchi by over 15,000 votes. He made the announcement through a social media post, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people.
In his statement, Chakrabarty highlighted his commitment to fulfilling responsibilities in both his film and political endeavors. He acknowledged the end of his political journey in 2026 and expressed optimism for the future under the new BJP-led government in West Bengal. Chakrabarty, known for directing popular Bengali OTT series, emphasized his intention to entertain audiences through his films.
Following the defeat of the Trinamool Congress, Chakrabarty becomes the second celebrity politician from the party to step back from active politics. Another prominent figure, actor-turned-politician Dev, also expressed a similar sentiment of focusing more on his acting and film production career. While Dev did not announce a permanent exit from politics, his decision reflects a trend among celebrity figures in the party.
