Investigations into the suicide of a 23-year-old dental student in Bengaluru revealed that she took her life due to alleged humiliation by her lecturers over her skin tone and dressing style. The student, Yashaswini, from a private dental college in Bengaluru, faced derogatory remarks about her skin color, leading to her extreme decision. Following an FIR registration, the college management dismissed six lecturers involved in the incident.
Yashaswini was reportedly subjected to comments like, “How can someone with dark skin become a doctor?” which deeply impacted her mental state. Her family and classmates claimed that the lecturers’ harassment pushed her to suicide. They protested at the college premises demanding justice for her. The college principal and five others were accused of caste-based abuse and harassment, resulting in the student’s tragic death.
The dismissed lecturers were from the Oral Medicine and Radiology (OMR) Department, where Yashaswini was a third-year student. Her mother, Parimala, urged for strict legal action against the responsible lecturers, emphasizing her daughter’s shattered dreams due to the alleged mistreatment. The incident occurred in Chandapura near Anekal, on the outskirts of Bengaluru, highlighting the need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the student’s suicide.
