Several exit polls conducted on Wednesday indicate a strong win for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma likely to secure a second term. Projections suggest the ruling party could comfortably surpass the majority mark of 64 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.
The polls forecast the Bharatiya Janata Party potentially winning over 80 seats independently, while estimating the Indian National Congress to secure between 25 to 35 seats, placing them in a distant second. Regional parties and independents are expected to claim the remaining seats.
Notable agencies like Axis My India and Matrize have projected a significant lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party, with estimates ranging from 85 to 100 seats. If these predictions hold, it would signify a strong mandate for the ruling party in Assam, further solidifying Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership position.
The current Assam Legislative Assembly’s term is set to conclude on May 20, 2026, with the formation of a new government expected before that date following the election results. In the previous 2021 elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance retained power by winning 75 seats, while the Congress-led opposition bloc secured 50 seats.
