Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay visited Assam and met with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to emphasize the strong historical connections between India, Bhutan, and Assam. Sarma welcomed Tobgay in Guwahati, highlighting the importance of enhancing relations between Bhutan and the Northeast region. Both leaders discussed boosting cross-border connectivity, trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges, aiming to strengthen economic and strategic growth in South Asia.
The leaders also focused on cooperation in areas like hydropower, education, infrastructure, and border development to deepen ties between Assam and Bhutan. The visit aimed to enhance sub-regional collaboration, creating new investment opportunities and promoting sustainable development in the Northeast. India and Bhutan have a long-standing diplomatic relationship, with India playing a crucial role in Bhutan’s development across various sectors.
Assam, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is actively contributing to this partnership, positioning itself as a key player in regional cooperation under India’s Act East policy. The geographical and cultural proximity between Bhutan and Assam has led to increased efforts to improve connectivity and economic cooperation in recent years.
