Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is expected to be sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member on April 10, as per sources from his residence. He plans to head to Delhi on April 8 or 9 to complete the necessary procedures in the Upper House of Parliament. After returning to Patna, Kumar is likely to step down from his Chief Minister position post-April 13.
Political activities are anticipated to accelerate after April 14, following the conclusion of the ‘Kharmas’ period, considered inauspicious in Hindu tradition. Additionally, the Bihar Home Department has confirmed that Nitish Kumar will retain his ‘Z Plus’ category security even after resigning as Chief Minister.
The security order, issued by the Special Branch, ensures his continued protection upon assuming office as a Rajya Sabha member. This decision was made after assessing his security needs under the Bihar Special Security Act, 2000. The Director General of Police and the Special Branch have been directed to provide top-level security.
The ‘Z Plus’ security category is the highest level in India, usually designated for top officials like the Prime Minister, President, and senior politicians. It includes a comprehensive security setup with approximately 55 personnel, comprising Personal Security Officers (PSOs), armed guards, escort vehicles, and constant surveillance.
Nitish Kumar was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16 and resigned from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30. His entry into the Upper House is anticipated to signify a significant political shift in the state. In a related update, Kumar inspected a government bungalow at 7 Circular Road, likely to be his residence post his Chief Minister tenure.
This residence is politically symbolic as he previously operated from there during crucial phases of his political journey. With these unfolding events, Bihar’s political scenario is on the brink of a notable transformation.
