Bihar Health Minister Nishant Kumar is conducting surprise inspections at government hospitals to address issues of negligence and unethical behavior among doctors. Following recent visits to Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Orthopaedic Hospital, the Minister has warned of strict action against absentee doctors and those allegedly diverting patients to private hospitals. Show-cause notices will be issued to absent doctors, with possible disciplinary actions if explanations are unsatisfactory.
Nishant Kumar emphasized the importance of government doctors being present during duty hours to provide uninterrupted healthcare services to patients. He also condemned doctors who influence patients to seek treatment at their private clinics instead of government facilities, stating that such actions erode public trust in the healthcare system. The Minister recounted an incident at LNJP where doctors were absent, leading to show-cause notices being issued and warnings of consequences for a doctor who directed a patient to his private clinic.
In response to issues at PMCH, Kumar engaged with junior doctors who had halted work to demand enhanced security measures following an assault incident. Discussions have taken place between the Health Department Secretary, protesting junior doctors, and the PMCH Superintendent to address concerns and restore normal healthcare services. This recent crackdown by Nishant Kumar follows his inspection of PMCH on June 23, which resulted in the removal of the then Principal for absenteeism and the appointment of Dr. Geeta Sinha as the new Principal.
