Vivek Ramaswamy, a billionaire entrepreneur supported by President Donald Trump, has secured victory in the Republican Party primary for Ohio governor, defeating his rival Casey Putsch. Ramaswamy, who garnered 87% of the votes, will now compete against Democrat Amy Acton in the upcoming general election. Initially contending against Trump for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, Ramaswamy later withdrew and endorsed Trump.
Trump appointed Ramaswamy as the co-head, alongside Elon Musk, of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to enhance government operations and reduce costs. Despite a brief tenure marked by clashes with Musk, Ramaswamy received Trump’s endorsement to run for Ohio governor. If elected in November, he would be Ohio’s third Indian American governor after Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley.
Ohio, a historically Republican state, has not had a Democratic governor for 35 years, providing Ramaswamy an advantage in the upcoming election. As a billionaire, he possesses significant personal financial resources for his campaign. However, he may face challenges due to escalating prices resulting from the Iran War and Trump’s declining popularity in polls. During the campaign, Putsch’s racist remarks and posts raised concerns, including derogatory comments targeting Ramaswamy’s heritage and citizenship.
Amy Acton, Ramaswamy’s Democratic rival, is a physician and moderate Democrat appointed as the state health director by Republican Governor Mike DeWine during the COVID outbreak. Ramaswamy, aged 40, holds a law degree from Yale University and has built a successful entrepreneurial career, founding Roivant Sciences and Strive. Forbes estimates his current wealth at $2.5 billion.
