The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a strong critique against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Odisha, pointing out 24 purported failures of the BJP-led state government. On the occasion of the two-year anniversary of the BJP coming to power in Odisha, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty highlighted these alleged shortcomings. Mohanty, in response to the Chief Minister’s social media post on the government’s achievements, listed various issues including a high number of reported crimes against women under the BJP government.
Alleging a concerning law-and-order situation, Mohanty mentioned that nearly 49,000 cases of crimes against women were reported within 18 months under the BJP government in Odisha. Referring to NCRB reports, he claimed that Odisha leads in cases of sexual harassment in public places and ranks second in crimes against women and incidents of violent crime. Additionally, Mohanty pointed out that Odisha recorded a significant increase in cognisable crimes in 2025 compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, Mohanty criticized the economic performance of the state, noting a sharp decline in Odisha’s GSDP growth rate over the years. He highlighted that the state attracted a minimal amount of FDI in the fiscal year 2024–25, raising concerns about economic development. The BJD spokesperson also accused the BJP government of failing on various economic and governance fronts, citing poor rankings in national indices, alleged irregularities in examinations, fiscal deficits, underutilization of budget allocations, and other issues.
