The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticized the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) for raising milk prices by Rs 4, accusing the state government of burdening consumers. The BJD claims that out of this increase, only Rs 1 will benefit milk farmers, while the remaining Rs 3 will go to the state government.
Speaking at a press conference, BJD spokesperson Dr. Lenin Mohanty revealed that the recent Rs 4 per litre hike in OMFED milk prices will disproportionately favor the government over farmers. Mohanty alleged that the state government’s actions, under the guise of supporting farmers, are actually aimed at profiting from consumers.
Demanding that the entire Rs 4 hike be passed on to farmers, the BJD emphasized the financial strain on the public due to escalating cooking gas prices. Mohanty expressed concerns over the continuous rise in gas prices, labeling it as an additional financial burden on the populace.
The OMFED’s decision to raise milk prices by Rs 4 per litre, affecting daily consumers, includes revisions such as toned milk now priced at Rs 54 per litre, premium milk at Rs 58, Gold Premium milk at Rs 60, and Gold Premium Plus at Rs 64 per litre. Smaller 500 ml pouches of toned and premium milk will also see price increases to Rs 27 and Rs 29, respectively.
