A Biju Janata Dal (BJD) delegation met with the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Chairperson regarding the alleged custodial torture and death of Sushant Sahu in Kabisuryanagar, Ganjam district. Led by Bhrugu Baxipatra, the delegation raised concerns over the incident and urged the Commission to take action. Baxipatra stated that Sahu, a physically challenged man and beneficiary of disability pension, died due to police torture without any FIR against him.
The delegation emphasized the need for immediate compensation and rehabilitation support for Sahu’s family. They requested the government to provide adequate compensation, support the children’s education and livelihood, and ensure employment for Sahu’s wife. Baxipatra highlighted the lack of an FIR against the police personnel involved in the incident and demanded legal action against them. The delegation also called for a thorough inquiry into the matter.
The Commission assured the delegation that it would take appropriate steps within its jurisdiction to ensure justice for Sushant Sahu and his family. Allegations suggest that Sahu was detained for questioning in connection with a case related to illegal stone blasting but his involvement was not established. After being handed over to his family in critical condition, Sahu was declared dead at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. The incident has led to the suspension of three police officials and the withdrawal of an under-training IPS officer.
