BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen is currently ahead in the Koridang Assembly constituency bypoll in Nagaland, leading by approximately 3,100 votes over Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd). The by-election took place on April 9, and the counting of votes is ongoing, with initial trends showing a strong performance by the BJP contestant.
After the second round of counting, Imchen has secured 7,317 votes, with Independent candidates Major Toshikaba (Retd) and Imtiwapang Kichu following with 4,194 and 3,633 votes, respectively. The BJP, a part of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), nominated Daochier I. Imchen, who is the son of late legislator Imkong L. Imchen and was the consensus candidate of the multi-party PDA alliance.
A total of six candidates are competing in the by-election, including candidates from the National People’s Party (NPP) and Congress. The contest also features three Independent candidates, making the race competitive. The final results are expected to be announced later in the day.
The counting of votes for the Koridang Assembly constituency bypoll in Nagaland began at 8 a.m. on Monday under a tight security setup, with Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and state security personnel deployed. The process includes counting postal ballots first, followed by votes from Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), with three rounds of counting at the Mokokchung District Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Strict security measures, including CCTV surveillance and access control, have been implemented at the counting venue. Election officials have ensured all necessary arrangements for a smooth and transparent counting process for the Koridang Assembly Constituency by-election.
The by-election on April 9 was triggered by the passing of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen, who died on November 11, 2024, at the age of 75. The voter turnout for the bypoll was 82.21%, with voting conducted at 30 polling stations.
