The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized the Congress for backing individuals accused in the 2020 North East Delhi riots case. The Delhi court rejected bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, citing a previous Supreme Court order.
BJP’s National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress of supporting Khalid and Imam, labeling them as conspirators against the nation. Poonawalla criticized the Congress for sympathizing with individuals like Nelson Mandela, portraying them as revolutionaries.
Poonawalla further alleged that the Congress has a history of supporting individuals convicted of terror-related activities, such as Afzal Guru and Yakub Memon. He claimed that the Congress’s actions reflect its animosity towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo echoed similar sentiments, stating that the Congress tends to support anti-national elements. Deo emphasized the seriousness of waging war against the nation, highlighting the significance of the court’s decision in this context.
BJP MP Manan Mishra supported the court’s decision, noting that the rejection of bail was expected following the Supreme Court’s stance. The case pertains to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the communal violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020, with Khalid and Imam facing charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
