The Sringeri recount row in Karnataka saw a BJP delegation meeting Governor Thawarchand Gehlot to complain about the delay in administering the oath to BJP MLA D.N. Jeevaraj. Following the recount of postal ballots, Jeevaraj was declared the winner, defeating the sitting Congress MLA T.D. Rajegowda.
Senior BJP leaders, including R. Ashoka and Araga Jnanendra, highlighted the delay in the oath-taking process to the Governor. They emphasized that as per the Constitution, the Governor has the authority to administer the oath to the elected candidate.
The BJP leaders alleged that Speaker U.T. Khader was intentionally delaying the swearing-in process. They pointed out that the Constitution empowers the Governor to nominate someone for this task. The delegation requested the Governor to intervene and ensure the oath is administered without further delay.
The Governor assured the BJP delegation that he would communicate with the government on the matter. He emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution and indicated that he might have to step in if necessary. The BJP leaders warned of launching protests if the Speaker continued to obstruct the oath-taking process.
The Speaker’s office was urged to adhere to constitutional norms, and the BJP informed the Governor of their intention to protest if the delay persisted. The BJP leaders emphasized the need for the Speaker to act promptly and in accordance with the law to avoid further escalation of the situation.
