The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Punjab is asserting its growing influence in the ongoing elections for 105 local bodies, including Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats. A senior BJP official highlighted the party’s significant progress in Punjab’s political landscape since the 2021 local body elections. In contrast to facing protests and candidate shortages in 2021, the BJP now sees enthusiastic participation from candidates without any reported protests against them.
The BJP has fielded a total of 1,226 candidates for Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections, along with 367 candidates for the eight Municipal Corporation elections. This move underscores the party’s expanding organizational strength and increasing acceptance among the people of Punjab. Notably, the BJP’s support is no longer confined to urban areas but has extended to rural regions as well, as demonstrated by the absence of protests during recent Block Samiti and Zila Parishad elections.
The peaceful participation of BJP candidates in the ongoing civic polls signifies a notable political shift in Punjab. It suggests that voters are increasingly considering the BJP as a credible political alternative capable of playing a crucial role in the state’s future political landscape. The State Election Commission has reported a total of 7,555 candidates contesting in the municipal elections, representing various political parties and independents.
