After assuming power, the Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal has initiated significant measures to curb cow smuggling in the state. The state government official emphasized the need for strict action against cow smuggling, directing district police to enhance surveillance immediately. Additionally, a clear directive has been issued to administrative authorities to prevent any illegal cow markets from operating.
The government has underscored the importance of monitoring and preventing the establishment of unauthorized cow markets. Both the state police and district police have been instructed to intensify efforts to combat cow smuggling effectively. Notably, Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal’s involvement in a cow smuggling case drew attention, leading to his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation in 2022.
Following Mondal’s arrest, his daughter was also implicated in the case and subsequently detained by the Enforcement Directorate. Both father and daughter were incarcerated in Tihar Jail before being granted bail. In a recent development, three trucks transporting cows for alleged smuggling purposes were intercepted in Malda district. Villagers intervened by halting the vehicles, prompting the arrival of police and central forces at the scene.
The interception took place near Gajol Kadubari at the bus stand on National Highway No. 12. A local resident, Mintu Saha, revealed that despite the government’s prohibition on cow-related transactions, individuals were procuring cows from various markets and transporting them in the seized trucks. The BJP had pledged to combat cow smuggling and establish a dedicated surveillance unit for this purpose before assuming power in the state.
