Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader R. Ashoka claimed that more than 2,800 farmers have died by suicide in Karnataka since the Congress government took office. Ashoka criticized the state government for its alleged failure to address the escalating drought crisis, demanding immediate drought declaration and Rs 50,000 per acre compensation for affected farmers. The BJP leader highlighted the severe agrarian distress in Karnataka, emphasizing the need for proactive relief measures.

Ashoka accused Congress leaders of neglecting the drought situation, stating that the crisis has pushed farmers into distress and forced migration in several districts. He criticized the Chief Minister for advising farmers not to cultivate crops, questioning the government’s approach towards agricultural activities. The Opposition leader compared the current administration’s response to drought with the previous BJP government’s proactive relief efforts during similar crises.

Referring to his observations in Malavalli, Ashoka highlighted the extensive agricultural losses and dried sugarcane fields he witnessed. He pointed out that nearly 80% of agricultural activities have halted due to the drought, leading to severe hardships for farmers. Ashoka urged the state government to promptly submit a comprehensive report to secure relief funds and utilize the State Disaster Response Fund for immediate assistance.

Citing rainfall data, Ashoka mentioned significant rainfall deficits in various regions of Karnataka, emphasizing the impact on agricultural productivity. He reiterated his call for the immediate declaration of drought across the state and the provision of Rs 50,000 per acre compensation to support affected farmers. The BJP leader criticized the state government’s handling of the drought crisis and urged proactive measures to alleviate the agricultural distress.
