Senior BJP leader R. Ashoka criticized Congress leaders for their lack of economic understanding and blind opposition towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for austerity among citizens. Ashoka pointed out historical instances, including late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s plea in 1967 to refrain from buying gold for national discipline, and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s similar appeal in 2013.
Ashoka accused Congress leaders of routinely opposing Modi’s initiatives without grasping historical context or economic principles. He defended Modi’s plea for restraint and economic discipline in light of global challenges, emphasizing that Congress leaders should reconsider their party’s past economic appeals for the nation’s benefit.
Highlighting the economic appeals made by past Congress governments, Ashoka underscored that while similar calls were accepted during the tenures of Indira Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi, they are criticized when voiced by Modi in the national interest. He urged Congress leaders to refrain from politicizing economic matters and advised them to educate themselves on basic economics before commenting on the country’s financial policies.
In a recent address, PM Modi urged citizens to stay united and patient amidst global uncertainties, citing the impact of the West Asia crisis on India and the world. Responding to Modi’s speech, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned the nature of Modi’s statements in Bengaluru, questioning whether they were made as the Prime Minister, BJP state President, or Leader of the Opposition in the state.
