BJP leaders have backed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s notices to Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee regarding properties allegedly owned by him. The KMC, led by Mayor Firhad Hakim, issued these notices under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act 1980, allowing owners of suspected illegal constructions a chance to explain their side.
Debjit Sarkar, a BJP representative, emphasized the need for equal treatment under the law, stating that justice must prevail regardless of one’s status. He alleged that Banerjee had acquired these properties by exploiting the people of West Bengal. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar highlighted the legal changes in West Bengal post-elections, stressing that any illegal constructions should be addressed through proper channels.
Sachin Sawant, a Congress spokesperson, criticized the KMC’s actions against Abhishek Banerjee as vindictive politics by the BJP. Copies of the notices have been displayed on properties linked to Banerjee, including residences on Harish Mukherjee Road and Kalighat Road. The KMC has targeted a corporate entity owned by the Banerjee family and Abhishek Banerjee’s mother in its investigation.
