Sajal Ghosh, the BJP’s new legislator from Baranagar Assembly constituency in West Bengal, hinted at the possible removal of Singur and Nandigram land movement chapters from the state board’s school syllabus. Ghosh, who transitioned from student politics in the 1990s, raised this issue at a recent event. He highlighted concerns over including names like Partha Chatterjee, a former Minister with a controversial past, in these chapters.
The BJP legislator emphasized the need for revising the state’s school education syllabus, especially regarding the chapters on Singur and Nandigram. These movements played significant roles in the downfall of the Left Front regime in 2011. The previous state government under Mamata Banerjee had introduced these chapters after coming to power. Ghosh indicated that the new state government would address the demands for syllabus changes.
Ghosh’s comments come amidst discussions on the relevance of chapters related to the anti-land acquisition movements in Singur and Nandigram. These movements, which gained national attention, are crucial historical events in West Bengal. The inclusion of controversial figures in the syllabus has sparked debates within academic circles. The state’s education department, currently overseen by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, is expected to undergo changes under the new administration.
