In a significant development for the BJP in Kerala, the party has won three Assembly seats, achieving its best performance in the state to date. The victory in Kazhakootam, secured by former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan in a tight contest against CPI(M) Legislator Kadakampally Surendran, was particularly noteworthy with a mere 265-vote margin.
This win by Muraleedharan adds to the BJP’s recent successes, including Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s win in Nemom and B.B. Gopakumar’s victory in Chathanoor. These results mark a notable expansion of the party’s influence in a state traditionally dominated by the LDF and UDF coalitions.
The nail-biting Kazhakootam battle, characterized by lead changes, highlighted the BJP’s growing competitiveness in urban areas within the state capital district. Chandrasekhar’s win in Nemom was symbolic, as it helped the BJP reclaim a constituency it had lost in the previous election, while Gopakumar’s victory in Chathanoor marked the party’s first win in this election cycle.
