Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, accusing them of stifling democracy and media freedom. Swaraj condemned the Punjab government’s actions against the Punjab Kesari newspaper and its staff, highlighting a pattern of suppressing dissenting voices. She emphasized the BJP’s strong opposition to such measures, signaling a challenging road ahead for the AAP in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Swaraj pointed out instances where the AAP government in Punjab allegedly targeted media outlets and journalists critical of their administration. She cited past incidents in Delhi where the AAP government reportedly restricted media access and expelled journalists for unfavorable coverage. Swaraj also highlighted cases where the Punjab Police, allegedly at the behest of Kejriwal, were involved in arresting individuals critical of the AAP leadership.
The BJP MP underscored a trend of authoritarian behavior by the AAP, alleging a lack of tolerance for criticism and dissent within the party’s ranks. Swaraj accused Kejriwal of using state machinery to silence opposition voices and manipulate the narrative to suit his political agenda. She warned of dire consequences for the AAP if such undemocratic practices continue unchecked, pointing to a growing discontent among the electorate.
