BJP MP Hema Malini has expressed worry about what she calls a “growing atmosphere of cultural fascism” in West Bengal. In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, she highlighted issues concerning the freedom of artists in the state. Malini, known for her dedication to India’s cultural heritage, emphasized the importance of upholding the country’s rich cultural legacy.
The letter, dated March 28, outlined Malini’s deep distress over the situation in West Bengal. She lamented the emergence of what she termed as cultural fascism in a state historically renowned for its art and literature. Malini cited specific incidents, including the abrupt cancellation of a scheduled performance at a prominent auditorium in Kolkata.
Pointing out instances of denied permissions and safety concerns for artists, Malini underscored the challenges faced by cultural practitioners in West Bengal. She expressed disappointment over the impact on livelihoods and the uncertainty created by last-minute disruptions to cultural events. Malini stressed the need to keep cultural spaces free from political influences to safeguard the country’s cultural heritage.
