The BJP has selected Parvesh Wahi as its official candidate for the upcoming Mayoral election in Delhi. Wahi, a councillor from Rohini E, is expected to secure the victory as the AAP has opted to abstain from the poll on April 26. Monika Pant has been nominated by the BJP for the Deputy Mayor’s position from Anand Vihar.
The Delhi BJP has announced the nomination of Jaibhagwan Yadav for the Leader of the House and Standing Committee member roles. Additionally, Manish Chadha has been chosen as the BJP’s candidate for the Standing Committee election. The BJP, with 123 councillors in the 250-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi, is likely to see success in the internal elections.
Parvesh Wahi, aged 59, who won the 2022 civic elections by a significant margin, currently serves as the Leader of the House in MCD. The AAP has decided not to contest the Mayoral election, with Delhi AAP convenor Saurabh Bharadwaj stating the party’s intention to allow the BJP another opportunity to govern the civic agency.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta criticized the AAP for abstaining from the elections, attributing the decision to internal discord and a fear of political setbacks. The BJP’s Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh emerged victorious in the previous Mayoral elections in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, defeating Congress’s Mandeep Singh. BJP’s Jaibhagwan Yadav faced competition from Congress’s Ariba Khan for the Deputy Mayor’s post.
