The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), part of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), successfully defended the Koridang Assembly seat in Nagaland’s by-election held on April 9. The Election Commission announced the results on Monday, with BJP candidate Daochier I. Imchen emerging victorious over Independent candidate Major Toshikaba (Retd) by a margin of 3,123 votes. Imchen secured 7,317 votes, while Major Toshikaba (Retd) received 4,194 votes.
Nagaland Chief Minister and PDA leader Neiphiu Rio extended congratulations to Imchen on his election to the state Assembly. Rio praised Imchen’s win, emphasizing the public’s trust in their shared vision for development and progress. Imchen, aged 35, secured his first term in the Nagaland state Assembly.
The BJP, a key member of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, fielded Imchen as its candidate. Imchen, the son of late legislator Imkong L. Imchen, was the consensus nominee of the multi-party PDA coalition. A total of six candidates contested the by-election, with Imchen emerging victorious after three rounds of counting at the Mokokchung District Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Grateful for the electorate’s support, Rio expressed appreciation for the PDA coalition’s workers and vowed to intensify efforts for Nagaland’s comprehensive development. The by-election, triggered by the passing of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen, recorded a high voter turnout of 82.21% on April 9, with stringent security measures in place following election-related violence earlier in the month.
