The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to impose an immediate ban and campaign restrictions on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the upcoming two-phase Assembly polls in the state. The BJP accused Banerjee of inciting violence against central armed police force (CAPF) personnel deployed for the polls.
In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the BJP highlighted instances where Banerjee allegedly made inflammatory and seditious statements at public gatherings, questioning the conduct and integrity of central forces under the Election Commission’s authority.
The BJP claimed that Banerjee’s statements aimed to depict lawfully deployed security forces as aggressors, incite violence, create fear among voters, and disrupt the electoral process. The party requested the ECI to impose a ban and campaign restrictions on Banerjee and to initiate legal action against her under relevant laws.
