BJP national spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to help elderly Sikh couples stuck at a gurudwara in Tehran. Shergill requested urgent action to enable these families to board a May 5 flight to India operated by Mahan Air. The airline is demanding permission from the Indian government before allowing their travel.
Iran hosts a small Sikh community, with a significant gurudwara in Tehran. Due to regional tensions post US-Israel strikes on Iran, flight restrictions have led to challenges for travelers. The Indian government is actively aiding stranded citizens in the Gulf region to ensure their safe return. Indian missions in the Gulf and West Asia are providing assistance and monitoring the situation closely.
The government is facilitating the return of Indians from the Gulf and West Asia, with over 12.65 lakh passengers having arrived in India since February 28. Indian missions are in constant touch with local authorities and are offering support to citizens. Flight connectivity between India and the region is gradually improving, with more services being introduced.
Indian nationals are advised against traveling to Iran, and those in the country are urged to exit via land borders. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has already helped over 2,400 Indians leave the country for their safety. The government is issuing regular advisories to keep citizens informed about travel regulations and consular services availability.
