The Bharatiya Janata Party’s official candidate for the upcoming Mayoral election, Parvesh Wahi, expressed gratitude towards the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) after AAP decided not to contest the polls. Despite BJP’s full majority, Wahi appreciated AAP’s decision. With AAP abstaining from the election, Wahi is now poised to win the Mayoral contest.
Wahi, taking a dig at AAP, acknowledged their move and stated that AAP made an appropriate decision considering their current position in democracy. Delhi AAP Convenor Saurabh Bharadwaj had earlier announced that the party would not participate in the Mayoral election. AAP’s decision aimed to give BJP another chance to govern the civic agency, hoping for failure and exposure before the public.
Incumbent Mayor and BJP leader Raja Iqbal Singh remarked that AAP’s choice not to contest the election was an excuse, suggesting that AAP avoided potential defeat due to lack of majority. Singh urged councillors to collaborate across party lines to work with the BJP-led state government in enhancing Delhi’s cleanliness and greenery.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta criticized AAP for conceding defeat and opting out of the Mayoral elections, attributing the decision to internal conflicts and fear of political embarrassment. Parvesh Wahi also thanked the BJP and the Delhi Chief Minister for their support, emphasizing a joint effort to serve the people of Delhi and expedite project implementation for public benefit.
