At least 24 people lost their lives, and 82 others were injured in a blast that targeted a shuttle of the Jaffar Express in Balochistan province. The explosion occurred as the shuttle, carrying law enforcement personnel returning home for Eid holidays, left Quetta Cantonment at around 8:05 a.m. local time. Following the blast, multiple bogies derailed, two caught fire, and nearby vehicles were damaged, with women and children among the casualties.
Fifty-seven of the injured individuals were taken to a military hospital, while 25 were transported to the Civil Hospital in Quetta for treatment. Initial investigations suggest that the attack was carried out using a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device containing over 70 kg of explosives. Balochistan’s Special Assistant for Home Affairs mentioned that officials are gathering information on the incident, with more details to be disclosed later.
Authorities have heightened security measures after the explosion, advising residents to avoid the area during ongoing emergency operations. The blast caused damage to nearby structures, including shattered windows and glass panes. Law enforcement teams have secured the area, and rescue efforts are underway to assist those affected.
Recently, Section 144 was enforced in Balochistan as a precautionary step against potential terrorist threats, as reported by local media. The restrictions, including a ban on displaying weapons, double riding on motorcycles, and gatherings of five or more people, will be in effect for 30 days, according to the notification issued by the Home Department.
