The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai has advised residents to take precautions against leptospirosis, especially while navigating rainwater or mud with open wounds during the monsoon season. The BMC emphasized the increased risk of infection for individuals walking through stagnant water or mud, particularly if they have cuts or wounds on their bodies. Leptospirosis, a potentially life-threatening disease, can be contracted through contact with rainwater mixed with contaminated mud, as it may contain Leptospira bacteria that enter the body through skin abrasions.
The Public Health Department of BMC recommended seeking medical advice and preventive medication within 24 to 72 hours for those who have been exposed to rainwater or mud. It further advised citizens to visit designated healthcare facilities for consultations, health check-ups, and free preventive medicines. Additionally, residents have been encouraged to raise awareness among their acquaintances about the disease and the significance of early preventive measures.
To prevent leptospirosis, individuals with cuts or wounds on their feet are advised to avoid walking through stagnant water. If unavoidable, wearing rubber boots or protective footwear is recommended. After any contact with rainwater, thorough washing of feet with soap and clean water, followed by proper drying, is suggested to minimize the risk of infection. Residents have been cautioned not to overlook symptoms like fever during the monsoon, as it could indicate diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue, or malaria, and immediate medical attention is advised over self-medication.
