The Bombay High Court revoked the bail of Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre in a case involving the alleged assault on three doctors at a civic hospital in Kalyan. The court directed Mhatre to surrender to the police by Sunday following the cancellation of his bail. The High Court criticized the earlier bail order for not considering the accused’s background and the severity of the assault on the doctors.
The court highlighted that the Magistrate’s bail decision did not require Mhatre to report to the police station or cooperate with the investigation. If Mhatre fails to surrender by 5 p.m. on Sunday, the authorities are authorized to take steps to attach his properties. The High Court also urged the doctors’ association to call off the planned statewide strike on July 22 in response to the assault and the bail granted to Mhatre and his associates.
The incident, which led to the assault charges, occurred at Shastri Nagar Hospital on July 6, where a dispute arose over the transfer of a newborn to another hospital due to limited NICU capacity. Mhatre and his associates intervened after being contacted by the family. Video footage showed Mhatre arguing with the doctors and staff, allegedly causing a doctor’s phone to fall and physically assaulting another doctor and hospital staff.
Mhatre denied the assault allegations, stating that he only pushed the doctor’s phone away as she was not listening. He claimed his actions were to ensure proper care for the newborn and the mother, emphasizing that he had no regrets. The court adjourned the case for further hearing on July 21.
