Brazilian basketball icon Oscar Schmidt, renowned for his scoring prowess, passed away at the age of 68 after battling a brain tumor for 15 years. Schmidt, a Hall of Famer since 2013, enjoyed a successful 30-year career in Brazil and Europe, setting records in both the Olympics and World Cups.
Schmidt, known for his exceptional long-range shooting skills, participated in five Olympics and four World Cups, holding the all-time scoring records in both competitions. His remarkable achievements include scoring 55 points in a single Olympic game and 52 points in a World Cup match.
Starting his career in 1974 at SE Palmeiras, Schmidt later played for various European clubs before returning to Brazil in 1995. Retiring in 2003 at the age of 45, he left a lasting legacy in the sport, with his record of 49,737 points being surpassed by LeBron James in 2024.
Affectionately called the “Holy Hand,” Schmidt downplayed his nickname, attributing his success to hard work and dedication on the court. The Brazil Basketball Confederation hailed him as a symbol of sports excellence, noting that his legacy transcends his passing, marking the end of an era while celebrating his enduring greatness.
