Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, aged 19, has set a goal to enter the world’s top 15 men’s tennis players in the upcoming year. Fonseca, who won two titles in 2025 during his first full season on the ATP Tour, views this achievement as a starting point for his career aspirations. He expressed his ambitious target in an interview with magazine Veja, stating, “I intend to break into the world’s top 15. It’s bold, but I’m thinking big. I will also be aiming for consistent results, without ups and downs.”
Fonseca began the year ranked 113th but has since climbed to No. 24 after securing victories in Buenos Aires (ATP 250) and Basel (ATP 500). His successful 2025 season also included notable performances such as reaching the third round at both the French Open and Wimbledon. Additionally, Fonseca shared his New Year’s resolutions beyond tennis, mentioning his interests in learning Italian, taking a poker course, and improving his financial management skills during his leisure time.
Gustavo Kuerten, the only men’s Grand Slam singles champion from Brazil, claimed victory at the French Open in 1997, 2000, and 2001. Fonseca, on the other hand, has made significant progress in his tennis career by reaching at least the second round in all four Grand Slam tournaments in 2025, with notable achievements in the French Open and Wimbledon. He has also represented Brazil in the Davis Cup, boasting a 4-2 win-loss record in this prestigious men’s team competition, as reported by Xinhua.
In August 2024, Fonseca rose to world No. 166 from the top 175, marking a substantial improvement of nearly 50 positions after securing his first Challenger title at the 2024 Lexington Challenger. Notably, Fonseca clinched the title without dropping a single set, making him the youngest Challenger champion of the 2024 season at just 17 years old. His impressive journey continued as he qualified for the 2024 Next Generation ATP Finals and emerged victorious despite being the lowest-ranked player in the competition.
Continuing his upward trajectory in 2025, Fonseca claimed his second Challenger title at the 2025 Canberra Tennis International, defeating American Ethan Quinn in the final. This win marked his 10th consecutive victory, propelling him to a new career-high ranking of No. 113.
