Brazilian youngster Joao Fonseca made a remarkable comeback at the French Open by defeating three-time champion Novak Djokovic in a thrilling five-set match. Fonseca, a 19-year-old #NextGenATP player, fought back from being two sets down to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5, surprising the 24-time major champion.
The victory over Djokovic came after Fonseca was just five points away from defeat in the fourth set. Despite Djokovic’s initial lead in the fifth set, Fonseca managed to turn the tide and secure the win after nearly five hours of play. This win marked Fonseca’s second upset against a Top-10 opponent.
Fonseca’s win against Djokovic made him the first teenager to defeat the former World No. 1 at a Grand Slam event. Advancing to the fourth round for the first time in a major, Fonseca is set to face either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul for a spot in the quarter-finals in Paris. Despite having fewer winners and more unforced errors than Djokovic, Fonseca’s ability to elevate his performance in crucial moments proved decisive in this historic match.
