Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced the opening of the first office of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex) in New Delhi. The agency aims to promote Brazilian products and services globally and attract foreign investments to key sectors of the Brazilian economy. President Lula highlighted the significant trade flow between Brazil and India, amounting to US$ 15.2 billion in 2025, with ample potential for further growth.
President Lula’s visit to India, which included a large Brazilian business delegation, underscores the focus on trade and economic cooperation in bilateral relations. The delegation comprises over 260 Brazilian companies, 14 cabinet ministers, and top chief executives, emphasizing the importance of expanding commercial ties between India and Brazil amidst evolving global trade dynamics.
During his visit, President Lula participated in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, emphasizing technology, digital infrastructure, and the role of artificial intelligence in fostering inclusive growth. This summit highlighted technology cooperation as a burgeoning aspect of the India-Brazil relationship, signaling new dimensions in their partnership.
President Lula is scheduled to engage in comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 21, covering various aspects of bilateral relations. The talks are expected to encompass trade, investment, energy, defense cooperation, digital technologies, and people-to-people connections. The leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, focusing on cooperation in multilateral forums and global governance.
Trade and economic collaboration are central to President Lula’s visit, especially in light of protectionist measures by the United States. Brazilian officials view India as a crucial partner for expanding markets and enhancing South-South cooperation. The robust delegation accompanying President Lula reflects Brazil’s commitment to strengthening commercial ties with India amid global supply chain transformations.
The India-Brazil relationship, elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2006, is grounded in shared democratic values and a joint vision of inclusive development. Both countries have collaborated closely in various forums such as BRICS, IBSA, the G20, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and UNESCO, fostering a strong and enduring partnership.
