Several members of the British Bangladeshi community in London gathered to protest recent attacks on media offices and threats against journalists in Bangladesh. The protest, held at Altab Ali Park in East London, included journalists, media professionals, activists, and community members. They condemned the vandalism, arson, looting, and alleged attempts on journalists’ lives at The Daily Star and Prothom Alo in Bangladesh. The demonstrators criticized the attacks as “unprecedented” and “unacceptable,” demanding a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible. Former BBC Bangla journalist Uday Shankar Das highlighted the escalation of violence against media houses, emphasizing that resorting to organized violence is never justified in a democratic society. Syed Nahas Pasha from the Commonwealth Journalists Association warned that such attacks not only harm media institutions but also endanger journalists’ lives, reflecting a governance failure. The protestors affirmed their unity against forces opposing the spirit of the Liberation War in Bangladesh, emphasizing support for press freedom and independent media as crucial for democracy. The London Bangla Press Club also condemned the attacks on media outlets, editors, and journalists in Bangladesh, expressing concerns about the threats to press freedom, freedom of expression, and democratic progress.
