The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to raise the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for Marketing Season 2026-27. Notably, the highest absolute hike in MSP has been proposed for sunflower seed at Rs 622 per quintal, followed by cotton, nigerseed, and sesamum.
This move aligns with the Union Budget 2018-19 directive to set MSP at a minimum of 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The expected margin for farmers over their production costs is projected to be the highest for moong at 61%, with other crops like bajra, maize, and tur/arhar also seeing significant margins.
In a bid to diversify crop cultivation, the government has been incentivizing the growth of pulses, oilseeds, and nutri-cereals by offering higher MSPs for these produce. Over the years, the MSP amount paid to farmers for paddy and 14 kharif crops has seen a substantial increase, reflecting the government’s support for agricultural sustainability and farmer welfare.
