The Calcutta High Court dismissed a plea from the Trinamool Congress faction led by Mamata Banerjee for an urgent hearing in the bank account freeze case. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, presiding over a single bench, stated that a one-day delay in the hearing would not cause any harm. The court scheduled the case to be heard on Thursday.
Trinamool Congress had its bank account frozen recently, prompting the party to challenge this decision in court. Senior advocates Kishore Datta and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are representing Trinamool in this case. Singhvi appeared before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, requesting an urgent hearing on the same day.
During the hearing, Advocate Datta emphasized Singhvi’s presence and urged the judge to proceed with the case promptly. However, the judge declined, mentioning that a slight delay would not have significant consequences. The court set the next hearing for Thursday.
In a previous hearing, the court raised concerns about the timing of the complaint that led to the account freeze. The judge questioned the swift action taken by the police following the complaint, as no specific crime had been alleged before the complaint was lodged. Advocate Singhvi argued whether the police could cripple a political party by blocking its financial resources.
The court has summoned an affidavit from the private bank on Sarat Bose Road in south Kolkata. It sought information from the bank authorities regarding the investigation’s progress. The court expects an update on the investigation during the upcoming Thursday hearing.
