The Calcutta High Court has granted interim anticipatory bail to Aditi Munshi, a former Trinamool Congress legislator and renowned devotional singer. The case against her, filed by the West Bengal Police, alleges possession of assets disproportionate to her income. However, the bail plea of her husband, Debraj Chakraborty, a Trinamool Congress councillor, was rejected by Justice Jay Sengupta’s bench.
Justice Sengupta directed both Munshi and her husband to cooperate with the police throughout the investigation. Notably, the bench considered the couple’s four-month-old daughter in granting interim relief to Munshi. Additionally, the court imposed restrictions on their foreign travel without prior approval, requiring them to surrender their passports to a lower court.
During the interim period, Munshi and her husband are prohibited from contacting or influencing any witnesses in the case. Munshi is also barred from entering the jurisdiction of Baguiati Police Station, where the case was registered. The allegations involve the transfer of assets worth approximately Rs 100 crore, allegedly understating the assets declared in Munshi’s election affidavit.
The police accuse the couple of accumulating significant assets through extortion, syndicate operations, and land-grabbing activities in the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Assembly constituency. Munshi represented this constituency as a Trinamool Congress legislator from 2021 to 2026 but was defeated in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections earlier this year.
