A vacation bench of the Calcutta High Court dismissed former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas’s request for an expedited hearing on his petition for protection from police action related to vandalism at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan. Biswas is scheduled to appear at the Bidhannagar (South) Police Station for questioning. His counsel, Kishor Datta, sought interim protection from coercive police measures, including arrest, in the case.
Earlier on Monday, Biswas’s counsel approached Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court for urgent relief, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution due to the impending interrogation. While the court accepted the plea for protection from police action, it declined the request for a fast-track hearing. The Bidhannagar (South) Police Station had initially summoned Biswas to appear on June 5 but granted a 14-day extension based on medical grounds.
Despite providing a medical certificate citing health issues, Biswas received a fresh notice to appear for interrogation by June 8 afternoon. His brother, Swarup Biswas, has already been arrested on charges of corruption and questionable conduct towards female staff in the entertainment industry. The former minister expressed concerns about a potential arrest following his brother’s detention and sought legal protection.
