Co-hosts Canada secured their inaugural FIFA World Cup point as substitute Cyle Larin scored a late equalizer, resulting in a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Group B opener at Toronto Stadium. This marked Canada’s positive start to their home campaign at the FIFA World Cup 2026, breaking a six-match losing streak in World Cup final tournaments and achieving a historic outcome in front of a jubilant home crowd, as per FIFA reports.
Bosnia and Herzegovina started strongly and posed a threat from set-pieces in the first half. Following an early warning shot by Amar Memic, the visitors took the lead when Sead Kolasinac flicked on a corner, leading to Jovo Lukic heading home to put them in front.
Despite conceding, Canada maintained their attacking intent. Jonathan David and Tani Oluwaseyi had chances, with David being denied by goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and Oluwaseyi missing a golden opportunity by firing over the bar from close range.
Canada upped their tempo in the second half, with Oluwaseyi and Richie Laryea coming close to scoring, but were thwarted by Bosnia’s defense and goalkeeper. Larin, brought on by head coach Jesse Marsch, made an immediate impact by equalizing just two minutes after his introduction, courtesy of Promise David’s assist.
Larin almost completed the comeback in stoppage time but was denied, resulting in both teams settling for a draw and a share of the points. Larin expressed his joy in contributing decisively, emphasizing his readiness to support Canada whenever needed.
The draw gives Canada a crucial point to kick off their World Cup journey, setting a positive tone for their upcoming Group B matches.
