Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, the current Australian Open champion and top seed, is set for a challenging start at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Alcaraz, ranked World No. 1 in the ATP Rankings, will kick off the season’s first ATP Masters 1000 event against either former World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov or the rising star Terence Atmane. Notably, the draw also includes five-time Indian Wells victor Novak Djokovic in Alcaraz’s half.
Alcaraz, who faced Dimitrov in the same tournament last year, is aware of the Bulgarian’s prowess despite his previous victory over him. Dimitrov has a strong track record at Indian Wells, having reached the semi-finals in 2021 and the quarter-finals in 2022. On the other hand, Atmane, making his main draw debut at Indian Wells after excelling in the qualifiers, is currently at a career-high ranking of No. 52 in the ATP Rankings. The French player has split victories with Dimitrov in their previous ATP encounters, including a recent straight-sets win in Acapulco.
Atmane expressed his excitement for the upcoming matches, emphasizing the competitive spirit among the players. The young Frenchman, reflecting on the prospect of facing familiar opponents, highlighted the unpredictability of the matches and the opportunity to challenge top players like Alcaraz. Meanwhile, Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion, is gearing up to face either Kamil Majchrzak or Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his first match post the Australian Open final.
In the same quarter as Djokovic, the seventh seed Taylor Fritz, the reigning 2022 Indian Wells titleholder, will begin his campaign against Damir Dzumhur or Jacob Fearnley. Additionally, second seed Jannik Sinner is eyeing his maiden title in the desert and is placed in the quarter alongside eighth seed Ben Shelton, who arrives with momentum following his recent triumph in Dallas. Sinner’s initial challenge will be against James Duckworth or a qualifier in the second round.
