India and the United States have advanced negotiations for a proposed bilateral trade agreement, with officials from both countries engaging in extensive discussions in New Delhi. A delegation from the Office of the United States Trade Representative visited India to discuss key trade-related issues such as trade in goods, customs, economic security alignment, and more.
The recent talks build upon a Joint Statement issued by both countries on February 7, 2026, outlining a framework for an interim agreement to ensure reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. This framework also reconfirmed their commitment to continue negotiations towards a broader India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement. The discussions during the USTR delegation’s visit were described as constructive and positive, reflecting a cooperative and pragmatic approach between the two sides.
Both India and the US expressed their dedication to finalizing an agreement that enhances bilateral trade and investment relations while fostering increased economic cooperation. These negotiations are part of ongoing efforts to enhance commercial ties and address trade-related issues within a structured framework, amidst the strengthening strategic and economic collaboration between the two nations.
