The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Lt Col Deepak Kumar Sharma, a serving Army officer, and a private individual named Vinod Kumar in connection with a bribery case related to alleged corruption in the defense production and export sector. Lt Col Sharma, who holds the position of Deputy Planning Officer (International Cooperation and Exports) in the Ministry of Defence’s Department of Defence Production, was apprehended for reportedly engaging in corrupt activities in collaboration with private companies involved in defense manufacturing and exports. Vinod Kumar is accused of facilitating the bribe. The CBI initiated the case on December 19 following credible information. The agency alleges that Lt Col Sharma accepted illegal gratification in exchange for favors from various government departments and ministries. The FIR also implicates Lt Col Sharma’s wife, Col Kajal Bali, and others, including a Dubai-based company. Rajiv Yadav and Ravjit Singh, managing the Indian operations of the said company, are alleged to have been in contact with Lt Col Sharma to obtain favors through illicit means. Investigators claim that Vinod Kumar delivered a bribe of Rs 3 lakh to Lt Col Sharma on behalf of the company. The CBI conducted searches in multiple locations, recovering the alleged bribe amount from Lt Col Sharma’s residence in Delhi. The agency continues its search at Lt Col Sharma’s office premises in New Delhi. Both accused individuals were presented before a court and have been remanded to police custody until December 23. The investigation is ongoing.
