The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended a Bank of Baroda branch manager and a middleman in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, for soliciting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a loan recipient. Gaurav Verma, the Branch Manager at Bank of Baroda’s Nonari Bujurg Branch, and Raghvendra, a Bank Mitra, were taken into custody by the CBI after being caught red-handed accepting Rs 15,000 in bribe money.
Following a complaint, the CBI initiated an investigation on June 3, alleging that the complainant, who had secured a loan of Rs 10 lakh under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in 2023, was coerced into paying the bribe by the Branch Manager through the Bank Mitra. The accused demanded the bribe in exchange for providing necessary documents for claiming interest subsidy under Pt. Deendayal Gramodyog Rojgar Yojana.
The arrested individuals were presented before a Special CBI court in Lucknow post their apprehension. The complainant, unwilling to comply with the bribe demand, sought the CBI’s assistance by submitting a written plea for urgent intervention.
