In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) detained retired district judge Giribala Singh from her Bhopal residence. This action is related to the alleged suicide of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma. The arrest followed the cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail by the Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home on May 12, five months after her marriage. Giribala Singh had initially been granted bail by a sessions court, citing her age and financial transactions to the deceased. However, the High Court overturned this decision, emphasizing the need for a more thorough examination of the case.
The High Court highlighted the need for deeper scrutiny under relevant legal sections, including those of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Dowry Prohibition Act. Allegations of harassment and pressure to terminate pregnancy were made against Giribala Singh and her son, with the court noting multiple injuries on Twisha’s body beyond the cause of death reported in the post-mortem.
Twisha’s family alleged that Giribala Singh, with expertise in cyber forensics and crime scene management, may have tampered with evidence. The Madhya Pradesh Advocate General emphasized the seriousness of the case, citing the presence of antemortem injuries on Twisha’s body and lack of cooperation with the investigation.
