The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has introduced ABHAY, an AI-based helpbot, to assist potential victims of cyber fraud. This tool aims to verify official notices in real-time, safeguarding individuals from threats posed by fake documents. ABHAY is a pioneering system crafted to combat the escalating risks of cyber fraud and digital arrest scams, offering citizens a means to authenticate notices independently.
Citizens often struggle to discern the legitimacy of official communications, prompting the development of ABHAY by the CBI. Termed as ‘AI-Based Helpbot for Authentication of Your Notice,’ this initiative empowers individuals by enabling direct verification. The prevalence of cyber-enabled fraud poses a significant challenge to India’s legal framework, exacerbated by technological advancements like Artificial Intelligence and deepfakes, which blur the lines between reality and fabrication.
Accessing ABHAY is convenient for citizens, as it is available on the CBI’s official website, www.cbi.gov.in. The verification process is user-friendly: upon receiving a notice purportedly from the CBI, individuals can visit the website, click on the ABHAY logo, complete an OTP verification using their mobile number, and upload a scanned copy of the notice. Subsequently, the chatbot ABHAY provides a verdict on the notice’s authenticity, categorizing it as genuine or potentially fraudulent.
The deceptive practice of ‘Digital Arrest’ in cyber fraud schemes instills fear in victims through coercive tactics. Perpetrators initiate this scheme by issuing a false notice under the guise of a legitimate law enforcement agency, falsely incriminating the victim. Subsequently, fraudsters manipulate victims into compliance, subjecting them to a fictitious legal process akin to a ‘digital arrest,’ a concept devoid of legal standing in Indian jurisdiction.
